Can Too Much Sun Exposure Weaken Auto Glass?
There may be a lot of things said about how auto glass can be weakened, but the best advice to heed is that coming from windshield experts. Speaking before San Diego Car Enthusiasts, California Windshield Technicians Association (CWTA) President Luke Davidson clarified about elements that could affect the strength of auto glass.
Davidson explains prolonged direct sunlight exposure can cause the windshield to expand to the edges. “This means there will be areas where it will be thinner, and an area where it will remain the same. If there are existing chips and cracks, then definitely these will be aggravated,” he explains. Windshield Insurance Claims

According to the CWTA, the best thing a vehicle owner can do is to park in the shade. “Should this be not possible, they should use at least a car cover to help shun heavy sun exposure,” Davidson says. He explained, sun visors only protect the interiors of the vehicle from too uch heat. Outside car covers protect the whole car from the harsh effects of sun light.
Another summertime concern for windshield repair technicians is the windshield’s exposure to volatile temperatures. Volatile temperatures can be harsh to the windshield because heat allows it to expand while cooler temperatures just allow it to be as is, so having to fight through these elements at the same time can be problematic for the windshield. It can make it brittle, according to the CWTA. Power Window Wiki
How can volatile temperatures simultaneously happen? Davidson says it is when the driver maxes out the air conditioning inside the vehicle while the sun is on full blast heating up the whole town. The CWTA suggests gradual cooling of the vehicle during hot summer days. This way, the windshield and the car windows can adjust to the changing temperature in the interior and exterior of the car. Going extremely cool when the windshield is extremely hot can be very damaging.
Simple car care tips can indeed go a long way, and when auto glass issues hound a vehicle, the best thing to do is to be pro-active and have it checked by a certified technician as soon as possible.
